 Students Learn About Publication Process

 from Local Author

Maple Hill High School students recently learned about the publication process when local author Gloria Waldron Hukle visited an English classroom on January 20, 2010.

Hukle brought copies of each of her three published novels and a wealth of personal experience to share with students. Students learned about the research required for historical fiction, and how to locate relevant primary documents. They also heard about the editing process, including how to find an agent and talk to publishing companies. The importance of networking was stressed, and Mrs. Hukle offered advice about finding like-minded organizations and venues for exposure.

“Perhaps the most important piece of advice Mrs. Hukle offered was to persevere and be willing to self-promote,” said MHHS English teacher Sandy Strock. "The publishing industry is undergoing numerous changes and challenges, and the new generation of artists will play a large role in the paths it pursues.  Judging by the engaged and intelligent questions the Creative Writing students asked, the future of publishing should be bright.”

November l, 2009 –BOOK FAIR- Gloria Waldron Hukle will be at Glens Falls, N.Y. Autumn Leaves: The 14th annual Glens Falls Chronicle Book Fair will take place on Sunday, Nov. 1, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Queensbury Hotel in downtown Glens Falls- Look for Gloria in the Adirondack Room.  Gloria Waldron Hukle is the author of three novels, MANHATTAN SEEDS OF THE BIG APPLE (l7th Century New Amsterdam), THE DIARY OF A NORTHERN MOON (20th Century Adirondacks-North Creek and Lake George) and published this summer, THREADS AN AMERICAN TAPESTRY, an early l8th century story of Provincial New York’s indomitable  Margaret Vandenbergh.  THREADS …weaves a captivating story of a colonial woman precariously straddling both the feminine and the masculine side of her personality while she struggles to keep her inherited estate together.  It is a story built amid multiple familiar as well as unfamiliar  names of that period, the central focus of the tale being the Hudson Valley daughter of an immigrating Dutch father and Native American Lenape  mother who inherits her father’s vast  estate.  Hukle’s third work is both powerful and timely because it lays open a wide gamut of  prejudices long ago seeded in fear and jealousy  that continue to this day.

This, then, is the story of Margaret, her family and friends, and a few who dislike her, for reasons that haven’t changed among humankind since time began.

17th CENTURY DUTCH MANHATTAN LIVES AGAIN AT BOOTH 1634

Three and a half centuries ago, Peter Stuyvesant, then Director General of the Dutch New Netherland Colony made immigrant Resolved Waldron an offer that would ultimately change the lives of thousands of Americans. Having survived the failed Dutch Colony of Brazil and the death of his first wife, Waldron was familiar with the pain of loss. Despite all he had endured, like scores of others who settled one of America’s earliest frontiers, he was determined to begin again.

Called hard-hearted by the Quakers and Flushing settler, John Bowne who later he was duty-bound to arrest, Waldron accepted Stuyvesant’s offer of a job as Assistant Sheriff settling his new wife and young family in a house located on Block B near the corner of what is today Wall Street and Broadway. As part of a Dutch West India Company envoy, Waldron partners with artist and mapmaker, Augustine Herrman, the two traveling during the year 1659 to St. Mary’s City (Maryland) to discuss border disputes between the Dutch and English. Later, as Stuyvesant’s trusted law enforcer, before the English take over the Dutch Colony in 1664, he will have arrested John Bowne. The trial and subsequent determination considered to be the first case of Religious Freedom in America.

June l, 2, 3, MANHATTAN SEEDS OF THE BIG APPLE, Author, Gloria Waldron Hukle will join with Substance Books at the New York City Book Expo, at the Convention Center, Booth 1634. Persons interested in arranging a meeting with Ms. Hukle may do so through contacts listed above.
